When New Jersey's most famous native son sang of escaping a land of factories, refineries and giant Exxon signs, He reinforced the idea that the state was one big industrial wasteland an idea that seems very true if you whiz through on the northern streches of the New Jersey Turnpike. Victorian houses in historic shore towns, fine Atlantic beaches, peaceful horse farms, revolutionary War sites? Well, he'd be a pretty wimpy rocker, but folks would have a better idea of all that New Jersey can offer.
Most visitors will want to spend their time in some of the small towns are Morristown, Lambertville, Princeton and especially along the Jersey Shore, which has some of the most charming beach communities in the Northeast. Atlantic City is popular for its casinos and boardwalk. The industrial corridor in the state's northeastern corner and the urban areas of Newark, Trenton and Camden have less to offer vacationers, though visitors to New York City may be surprised to find the Newark area offers several interesting sights.
