May-November is an excellent time to tour Austria. October is particularly nice -- there are fewer tourists and the lines are shorter for museums, etc. A sweater is generally needed for evenings, even in summer. The temperature is considerably colder as you go higher in elevation. Winters are cold and often drizzly in Vienna, but in the mountains it's the best time for skiing .
