DurhamDurham is 65 mi/105 km north of York. The main attractions are the university town known for its beautiful setting, the cathedral and castle. The castle now serves as a residence hall for students. Don't miss the treasury museum in this cathedral. Also visit the Beamish Museum about 10 mi/16 km north where streets complete with stores and houses have been restored to evoke earlier times. Other attractions include Housesteads, another well preserved Roman fort near Bishop Auckland; Corbridge, a Roman fort built along Hadrian's Wall; Binchester, an ancient Roman town with well-preserved granaries; and the Bowes Museum and adjacent 11th-century Barnard Castle.
